Story
I am taking part in Australia's most stunning Marathon - The Great Ocean Road Marathon!
I am hoping to raise as much money as possible for Gawura School where I teach. It is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander School, built on Gadigal land in the centre of Sydney’s CBD. The formation of Gawura in 2007 occurred in response to the overwhelming evidence of underachievement and social disadvantage among people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander origin. I love teaching there and so am even more inspired to raise some dollars by sweating it out along the iconic Great Ocean Road with stunning views of the Southern Ocean.

Gawura Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander School (St Andrew's Cathedral School Foundation)
The education of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is a matter of social justice in our land.
Gawura is a unique primary day school programme for disadvantaged Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in Sydney who live at home with their families. Gawura provides places for 35 Indigenous students in a multi-stage classroom, focusing on literacy and numeracy acquisition in an environment that celebrates Indigenous cultures as a pre-eminent part of the learning environment. Close collaboration with parents and families is critical to the success of this program and to the continued engagement of the students.
The aim of the programme is for our Gawura students to achieve educational outcomes equal to (or better than) their non-Indigenous peers. Our mission is to break the entrenched cycle of disadvantage experienced by Indigenous children by providing them the best opportunity for educational success, a choice of direction for the future and a foundation upon which they can build for the rest of their lives.
