Story
I am taking part in Australia's most stunning Marathon - The Great Ocean Road Marathon!
I have decided to make a real difference by aiming to raise as much money as possible for a charity which is particularly close to my heart- Australian Marriage Equality. Same-sex attracted individuals in Australia have been marginalised for far too long and having equal marriage rights would be a huge step forward in promoting a culture of acceptance and celebration for LGBTI people in the community. In 1958, in the midst of the struggle for black civil rights in America, Martin Luther King Jr declared,
“When any society says that I cannot marry a certain person, that society has cut off a segment of my freedom.”
Consider all the other groups in society, along with people of colour and same-sex attracted people, who at one time or another have been denied the right to marry the partner of their choice: women, people from differing faiths, people with disabilities. Not having marriage equality sends a negative message to the community that prejudice, discrimination and unequal treatment of same-sex individuals is acceptable.
Not allowing homosexual couples to marry affects all same-sex attracted people by infringing their fundamental rights, fostering discrimination against them and impairing their physical and psychological health.
I consider myself a particularly healthy person, but did you know that I am extremely rare in the LGBTI community? Same-sex attracted Aussies are more likely to experience below average health outcomes including higher levels of depression, due to prejudice and discrimination. The statistics are particularly alarming among younger and newly identifying LGBTI people who have consistently higher rates of drug and alcohol abuse, homelessness, early school leaving, conflict with peers and parents and suicide ideation, all directly linked to the discrimination and prejudice they experience.
In his hit song 'Same Love', Macklemore said:
"A certificate on a wall ain't gonna change it all, but it's a damn good place to start".

Let's make 2014 the year of equality Australian Marriage Equality is calling for donations to help us continue our successful work in progressing a reform that will benefit so many couples, families, and communities across Australia. 2013 has been a huge year for the fight for equality. This year will be even bigger. We anticipate the coalition may allow a conscience vote on marriage equality soon, so we need to convince 25 more MPs to support marriage equality.

Australian Marriage Equality has run many successful campaigns that have lead to marriage equality being endorsed by the Tasmanian government, the ACT Government, and the Federal Labor Party. We now strive to work towards amending the Marriage Act to end discrimination against same-sex couples, a goal that is supported by a majority of Australians.
